Shamate at King’s Cross! 💥
From the skating rinks of Dongguan to the streets of London — Shamate has made it to King’s Cross!

Happy to have been part of My Escape, a public art project presented by @love.camden in King’s Cross branchs this summer.

As a long-time Camden resident, it feels particularly special to see my work in a neighbourhood I’ve called home for years.

Camden has long been associated with punk, alternative fashion, and subcultures. Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, China’s Shamate youth have developed their own striking visual language through colourful hairstyles, self-fashioning, and online communities.

Different histories, different contexts, but perhaps a shared desire to be seen, to belong, and to create identities beyond mainstream expectations.

Bringing Shamate into London’s public space feels like a small but meaningful encounter between these worlds.

4A CHAMPION // We’re honoured to celebrate Funa Ye 叶甫纳as our next 4A Champion as part of 4A’s 30th anniversary celebrations.

Funa Ye 叶甫纳 (@oyester) is a Chinese artist, whose practice is concerned with the relationship between the realities of everyday life. She is interested in the perceived connection between authority and many areas of social life. Her work plays on different power structures, ethnic groups and the fictional space of propaganda to explore the concept of ‘perfection’ in an ideological system and utopian landscape. Her work is politically charged, subtly engaged in pastiche as a satirising style of propaganda.

Funa first exhibited with 4A in ‘TRANSFORM.ME 易装·癖’ (2024), a transformative exhibition that reimagined the gallery as a cyber-grunge salon, paying homage to China’s SMART (Sha-ma-te) subculture and its evolution from rural communities to contemporary urban youth culture. In September 2025, she returned as part of ‘Infinite Scroll 荧屏沉溺’, a group exhibition curated by 4A at the Chau Chak Wing Museum, which reflected on digital acceleration and the tensions between speed, consumption and meaning in online environments.

The 4A Champion Circle brings together artists, alumni and supporters who have helped shape 4A over the past three decades.

We‘re proud to celebrate Funa Ye 叶甫纳 as part of the 4A Champion Circle.

🌀 FINAL WEEK // Infinite Scroll 荧屏沉溺

Only one week left to experience ‘Infinite Scroll 荧屏沉溺’ at Chau Chak Wing Museum (@ccwm_sydney).

Curated by Thea-Mai Baumann (@metaverse), CEO of 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art, the exhibition brings together works by Xia Han (@xiaaahan), Gao Hang (@gaohangart) and Ye Funa (@oyester).

Using humour, interactivity and digital media, the artists examine the politics of online life. From AI-generated avatars to game-inspired worlds, their works parody and remix online cultures, exploring how digital platforms shape the way we see, think and interact.

Visit before it closes and experience Infinite Scroll for yourself.

✨ Delighted to share that Peep Stream is currently on view in Ways of (Machine) Seeing, part of the wider exhibition programme REWORLDING curated by MA Curation students at the University of Exeter.

Bringing together works by Xu Bing and myself, the exhibition reflects on how digital culture has entered everyday life through screens, images, algorithms, surveillance technologies, and facial recognition systems. Rather than celebrating or condemning these transformations, Ways of (Machine) Seeing invites us to pause and consider how digital culture quietly shapes our habits, relationships, perceptions, and sense of self.

Many thanks to curators @uofecuration Leixinyun Huang and Yifan Yang for their thoughtful interpretation of Peep Stream and for creating this space for reflection and dialogue.

Mastrland board game playtest & co-creation workshop 💿⚡️

Thank you everyone who entered this half-built world of QQ zones, internet cafés, factory floors, heartbreak, cyber drama and chaotic self-expression.

What started as a board game slowly became something between role-play, collective storytelling and social simulation. Participants collected Q-Coins, carried Reality Bricks, changed hairstyles, chased clout and rewrote rules together in real time.

Some people said the game felt “too real.” Others said it felt less like a normal board game and more like an artwork about pressure, youth and survival.

Thank you for all the jokes, complaints, suggestions, wigs, snacks, memories and strange energy. Mastrland will keep growing 💜#boardgamephotography #shamate by @oyester
