Something happened recently in Austin, Texas. I ate a country fried steak that changed my life.

But that’s not all. You know when people say something changed their life they don’t really mean their life changed? Because they often mean just – I don’t know - country fried steak?

This time I really mean when I say life changing.

Honestly. What I learned and experienced at Square Peg Social changed my life because the same way you come across a poem or work of art so startling you no longer see the world the same way after seeing said art — That’s what happened for me. And I suspect for my new friends too whom I met there.

Lars Knudsen, Ari Aster, and Amy Knudsen created and fostered an environment that was so candid, transparent, and vulnerable, but also so incredibly fun and inspiring, that I saw and experienced first hand how art should and can be pursued.

Here were some of the most highly admired and respected artists in the industry. But they’re all friends, friends for years and years, and they make films. They back each other up and face down fear together with creativity and passion. They flew from across the country to mentor us.

Why? All because Lars, Ari, and Amy asked them to. And they wanted to with joy.

This is my standard now for art and the kind of people I want to be with in life.

Thank you Amy, Lars, Ari, Mandy, Emily, all the mentors who came to help us, and all the wonderful people at Square Peg for changing my life. Thank you to my fellow filmmakers and new friends.

For someone who did not go to film school, and who was reluctantly starting to believe the business of art was increasingly without humanity —Thank you for proving and showing us that you can do art and business and also be the most incredible humans while doing so.

Thank you for recognizing my first short film Antyesti and the talented artists and actors who were a part of that adventure (More on this soon!)

And thank you for bringing me to Austin Texas so I could try the country fried steak and attend the inaugural Square Peg Social

Thousands of miles apart and in vastly different lands Kathy and Aka might not appear to have much in common. But both are on the front lines of a fight that threatens all of humanity

Welcome Home Hōkūleʻa!

For 2,000 years Polynesian wayfarers voyaged across the vast Pacific ocean, discovered new lands, and founded new cultures. They sailed according to tradition navigating by the stars, sun, moon, wind and by even reading ocean currents and natural phenomenon like the flights of birds.

This art of navigation was nearly lost - and much of Hawaiian culture in various forms and threats - but thanks in great part to the Hōkūleʻa a cultural revival and cultural renaissance that started in the 1970s continues to this day - reconnecting modern Hawaii with its 2,000 year legacy.

Here is an iPhone photo on one of four ocassions I was fortunate enough to sail and film on the Hōkūleʻa with Captain Nainoa and the Polynesian Voyaging Society. Of those four times I got seasick just once by @ozgo

Where's Waldo

An abundance of color and life in every corner of India. This scene literally stopped me in my tracks there was so much going on visually. Of the eleven people I count in this frame I like the person in the upper left reaching for a length of rope.
