London witnessed protests outside the High Commission of India as rival groups staged demonstrations over recent political developments in India. The demonstration, organized by the Student Federation of India (SFI) UK, aimed to amplify demands put forward by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), including the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the scrapping of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Demonstrators chanted slogans like ‘Azadi’ and waved the Indian Tricolour, declaring, “We will not tolerate the erasure of votes. We will not tolerate police violence. We are here in defence of Indian democracy.” Across a security barrier managed by Metropolitan Police officers, a group of government supporters organized a counter-protest, waving a large cut-out of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and responding with chants of “Modi, Modi” and “Bharat Mata Ki Jai.” Expressing concern over the demonstrations, Rahul Kale, a London-based entrepreneur, stated, “I feel it is necessary for the protesters to understand that these protests in London for no reason hamper investor confidence and create unnecessary panic.”

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the RSS Ban, and Gandhi’s Assassination Following Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination on 30 January 1948, the Government of India banned the RSS on 4 February 1948, with Home Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel approving the decision. The government accused members of the organisation of involvement in violence, including arson, robbery, and murder. In a letter to Jawaharlal Nehru dated 27 February 1948, Patel wrote that a fanatical section of the Hindu Mahasabha, operating under Savarkar, had conspired to assassinate Gandhi. Later, in a letter to Syama Prasad Mookerjee dated 18 July 1948, Patel stated that the activities of the RSS and Hindu Mahasabha had created an atmosphere in which such a tragedy became possible. He also described the RSS’s activities as a threat to the existence of the government and the state. The RSS ban was lifted in July 1949 after negotiations with the government. The organisation agreed to adopt a written constitution, function as a cultural organisation, operate within Indian law, and work openly rather than secretly. History reminds us that even the leaders who helped shape independent India held serious concerns about organisations operating in its political and social landscape. Understanding their words is essential to understanding that history. #vallabhbhaipatel #banrss #rss #gandhi #india
