@drmesiwala and I after attending
#aans2019 in San Diego. We had some time to chat over espresso and gelato. Dr. Mesiwala has been my mentor since 2010, my earliest days of medical school and has guided me and supported the development of my medical career. He is a phenomenal physician and surgeon who really takes the stigma of neurosurgery and turns it around. Dr. Mesiwala has taught me about medicine, surgery and major clinical research, but it was the conversations we had in between surgeries or late at night in the ICU that were profound pieces of advice. He always told me that what we do as surgeons is whatever is best for the patient. Making that decision, in the best interest of the patient, is the hard part of the job. He also reminds me that no matter how influential you become, always be there to support those that are working hard and trying to come up. Now, I have several students I mentor and I share the same thought process with them. Sometimes we all need a person that believes in our mission and keeps us on the right track. Shoutout to my mentor, Dr. Mesiwala.
