When we premiered The Way We Are at the Lagos Fringe Festival, one of the audience mentioned being surprised that the ladies in the documentary had that kind of experience, considering how beautiful they all look. I looked at her, smiled at her and told her, “That’s the thing with beauty standards. It’s not that you are not beautiful. It’s just the society and people projecting what they think beauty should look like to you, telling you how you should look and most times, being harsh and demeaning with their comments, especially in this time and age of social media.”
