We continue our journey to introduce the incredible artists featured in this year’s PhotoVogue Festival, “The Tree of Life: a Love Letter to Nature,” from March 6th to 9th, 2025, at @base_milano.
The project “Eskawatã Kayawai” by Lucía Alonso Garrido portrays the self-claimed Huni Kuin, or “true people,” now experiencing a cultural revival after narrowly escaping extinction in the last century. Some fled to Peru and remote areas of Acre, preserving their rituals and deep connection to the rainforest, while others who remained in Brazil endured displacement due to the rubber industry. Now, they are recovering and working to pass on their rich knowledge of the forest to future generations. Their culture, rooted in ancestral stories and guided by cosmopolitics, includes sacred practices like the kenes, a shamanistic geometry, and nixi pae (ayahuasca) rituals that reveal the mysteries of life, the forest, and human existence.
