Underbiking can be a topic of elitism and pretentiousness within the bike community. Internet experts saying things like “that’s not mountain biking, I can do that on my cyclocross bike.”
I like to think of the bike you choose and the way you ride as space. To paraphrase a conversation I had with Franklyn about rhetoric and spaces, take the example of a parent dropping their kid off at school. It takes 15 minutes by car. It takes 5 minutes to walk to the same school by a shortcut, but the parent chooses to drive because they only know the space of cars.
You can take different bikes on the same path. Same place, different space and a different experience. I’m more focused on avoiding flats whereas someone with a beefier bike might be able to optimize speed or show some more style on the same trail. Neither is better than the other, but just a different way to explore.
