Worst night of my life! Last night Ahsoka got into a bag of mints, I had no idea Xylitol was toxic to dogs (not that I would have allowed her to eat them either way). She started stammering around the house then had a seizure which is the hardest thing our family has witnessed. We rushed her to the ER. Xylitol causes low blood sugar and liver failure. I couldn’t afford the overnight care that was recommended and the vet trusted my midwifery skills enough to let me monitor her blood sugar and IV fluids at home. I’m incredibly grateful I was able to do that, and also that was the worst experience. I am no stranger to being up all night but the mental and emotional load I had to carry while offering medical care was a heavy burden. Her blood sugar dropped multiple times and she did not cooperate when I wanted her to eat! This has never been an issue for her. I’m happy to report she is stable now and back at the hospital for more monitoring. I am very hopeful she can come home tonight without the need for overnight monitoring, I do not want to do that again! Thank you for the prayers and messages.
