The Magical Island Robinson Crusoe ποΈ >> Juan FernΓ‘ndez Archipelago <<
Robinson Crusoe β real name Alexander Selkirk β was marooned on this Southern Pacific Ocean Island forΒ four years and four months, from 1704 to 1709.
In September 1704, Selkirk was put ashore on MΓ‘s a Tierra, the island's former name, initially at his own request, after a quarrel with his captain.Β
On February 1, 1709, Selkirk was rescued by the privateer vessel Duke, captained by Woodes Rogers.Β
Selkirk's story inspired the title character in Daniel Defoe's 1719 novel Robinson Crusoe, which is often considered the first English novel.Β Thereupon the island was renamed.
