I've been using this map for 40 years now, each time filling in the new routes every other year or so, when back in my home village and visiting kin, family, and friends there ✍️

There's not a single flight entered in this map.

The Magical Island Robinson Crusoe 🏝️

Robinson Crusoe — real name Alexander Selkirk — was marooned on this Southern Pacific Ocean Island for four years and four months, from 1704 to 1709.

In September 1704, Selkirk was put ashore on Más a Tierra, the island's former name, initially at his own request, after a quarrel with his captain.

On February 1, 1709, Selkirk was rescued by the privateer vessel Duke, captained by Woodes Rogers.

Selkirk's story inspired the title character in Daniel Defoe's 1719 novel Robinson Crusoe, which is often considered the first English novel. Thereupon the island was renamed.

Situated in the "Far East" of the Pacific Nation Kiribati 🇰🇮, Kiritimati (local tongue for "Christmas Island") is the population center of the Line Islands and at 609 km² the world's largest atoll by land area.

The British conducted nuclear tests here in 1957. The country became independent in 1979, and nowadays you don't see much reminding one of a former British presence, apart from maybe driving on the left side.

Australia does assume the role of international protector, which mainly means trying to implement control over whoever fishes in their waters.

Some tourists come to the island for famous bonefish catching tours.

Because of a dent in the international dateline, if you come in from the North you'll suddenly be exactly 24 hours in front in time (same time but one day forward).

The island is part of the Polynesian archipelago, while the people are of Micronesian descent (meaning slightly darker, somewhat between Polynesian and Melanesian in complexion).

Faith is very strong on the island, and mass and the act of receiving Holy Communion is celebrated daily here, unlike weekly, Sundays, or even only four times per year, as in most countries.
