Raw rock ‘n STROLL (?) from Bennie C. Mendez & Combo, who cut three rare singles for the San Benito-based IDEAL label. The two sides here are QUE FUE LO QUE PASO & ESTE ES EL STROLL.

This was right in the middle of the early 1960s period that Freddie Fender was recording originals compositions and r&b covers en Español for the same label, so it could be presumed that they were of the same camp or even sharing common backing musicians, though there’s no information available about Mendez to confirm.

Glad to add this one to the archive!!

Very glad this went to a proper home and not someone trying to flip a crazy profit off it! 👏

AND Bennie’s wife also confirmed that the Mendez brothers would often collaborate with Freddy Fender. Amazing history.

The Mendez family are frequent visitors in our shop! Sadly the Mendez brothers, Bennie and Jay, are no longer with us. They had a label called BENJA (BENnie & JAy) out of Brownsville, very very rare to find anything on that label. Check out Johnny Jay and the Pompadors to hear more of Bennie’s amazing songwriting.
