A previously undocumented gem found today! The Sunshine Connection is a modern soul-leaning gospel project from New Orleans, who recorded this album in November 1987 and released it on their own label, La Parisienne Records.

This group is led by the father/son duo of Louis A. Torregano and Louis A. Torregano, Jr., the elder of which was leader of the previous iteration of this group, called the Sensational Travelers, formed in 1967 and having released a few 7” on private Nola labels in the 1970s.

This appears to be an attempt by Tortegano Jr., who wrote and arranged every song, to inject the younger generation’s drum machine sound to his father’s gospel music, to good success.

My favorite cut is the title track “Sunshine”, listen to the audio here! ☀️

Sadly, a window of our car was smashed overnight Saturday (completely pointless, nothing stolen). It’s now been repaired, and we could use some help to soften this unexpected financial blow. Please have a look at the items that I’m posting today.

Bobby Pauneto’s El Sonido Moderno/The Modern Sound of LP on Mardi Gras has been a highly sought-after (and $$$) LP for decades and for good reason. Even the reissue that I have (maybe the only ever repress?) is scarce. It’s easily one of my most played albums in the house, and is up there with the best albums of that NY latin jazz era, standing apart with its sophisticated arrangements, frantic percussion, and Bobby’s spectacular vibe playing throughout.

In Tito Puente’s liner notes on the rear, he mentions that Pauneto had earlier cut some sides for Seeco Records in relative obscurity prior to a stint in the Army. Those recordings are scattered across a few rare 7”s and were recently compiled for the first time by the UK reissue label Charly under the title “Bobby’s Boogaloo”.

I recently discovered this interesting compilation release on Tropical Records (a budget label that would often issue older 7” & 10” latin jazz on LP format), which is titularly a tribute to Venezuelan bolero singer Felipe Pirela, featuring singers Chemin, Oscar Ticas, and “Otros.”

Curiously, “otros” seems to be referring to Bobby Pauneto and two instrumentals of his that have nothing to do with Pirela, as best I can tell. On the A-side is Algo Para “O.M.”, a gorgeous track that I see no evidence of having been physically released otherwise. The B-side ends with an earlier, stripped-down version of Aguatando, which was later re-recorded and opens the Modern Sounds LP. This recording is more lo-fi and is without the vocals punches of the better-known version. Presumably, these were a part of those early Seeco sessions and were tacked onto this LP.

I wanted to hip y’all to this digger’s tip, as this Tropical LP can be had for < $20, and these two Pauneto tracks are worth that and some. Based on an IG search, this is still relatively unknown, with only a few Japanese collectors having posted it before. Another reminder to read the liner notes and always keep digging.

Despeinada is the second of three LPs Freddie Fender released from 1963–1964, compiling songs issued prior on 7” format. At the time, Freddie was rebuilding his career after a prison sentence in Louisiana for cannabis possession. He initially served six months at Angola State Penitentiary, then transferred to DeQuincy Correctional Facility, serving three of a possible five years.

On July 23, 1963, he was paroled thanks to a favor from Louisiana Governor Jimmy Davis—best known for writing “You Are My Sunshine.” Freddie was 26. A condition of his parole required him to secure work, so Ideal Records boss Paco Betancourt gave him a job in his hometown of San Benito, TX, running the label’s record shop, sweeping floors, and sorting vinyl. In the back studio, he worked as a sound engineer, recording local legends like Tony De La Rosa and Lydia Mendoza.

During off-hours, Freddie reformed the band that had cut Eddie Con Los Shades before his incarceration in a rush to support his family. They recorded prolifically—releasing a flurry of 7”s, compiled on three LPs: Interpreta El Rock (ILP-136), Despeinada (ILP-150), and Pancho Pechos (ILP-158).

The song choices on Despeinada reflect Freddie’s close attention to Mexican charts. With rock ‘n’ roll surging in Mexico, he covered hits like “Despeinada” (Los Hooligans), “Diablo Con Antifaz” and “Pera Madura” (Manolo Muñoz), “Enamorado” (Keith Colley), “Cuando Calienta El Sol” (Los Hermanos Rigual), “Las Cerezas” and “Magia Blanca” (Los Hermanos Carrión). He also tackled two José Alfredo Jiménez ballads and the Beatles’ “All My Loving,” released just a year earlier.

Freddie would soon return to Louisiana, performing regularly at Papa Joe’s on Bourbon Street through 1968 alongside greats like Fats Domino, Herb Alpert, and Aaron Neville. Though many trials still lay ahead—including a parole violation for drug smuggling—Despeinada captures a pivotal moment of creative urgency from a legend still on the long road to fame.

Raw rock ‘n STROLL (?) from Bennie C. Mendez & Combo, who cut three rare singles for the San Benito-based IDEAL label. The two sides here are QUE FUE LO QUE PASO & ESTE ES EL STROLL.

This was right in the middle of the early 1960s period that Freddie Fender was recording originals compositions and r&b covers en Español for the same label, so it could be presumed that they were of the same camp or even sharing common backing musicians, though there’s no information available about Mendez to confirm.

Glad to add this one to the archive!!

A couple recent uploads to the DISCOS MAMBOS archive YouTube.

First up, the forgotten cut from this Carlos Guzman album that’s NOT “Las Cadenas”. “Ven” is an upbeat organ vamp with a sick guitar solo and wah-wah/vocoder (?) interlude.

I also noted that many Sunny Ozuna recordings are missing from YouTube, so I’ll be filling some gaps this coming week. Starting off with “Sunny’s Sign-Off”, which is a vocal rap of Sunny sending gratitude to his fans and giving credit to his band, roadies, and Tear Drop label head Huey Meaux.

Send some gratitude my way if you want to support the archival work I’m pursuing with this project. Also, subscribe to my YouTube channel, linked in bio 🤓 taken in Los Angeles, California by @discosmambos

This week’s addition to the online archive comes courtesy of THE LATINGLOWS, a South Texas group that released three albums in the early 70’s on Buena Suerte Records. This LP was produced by the legendary producer, Manny Guerra, who essentially shaped the tejano sound going forward.

The track is a cover of “Cherry Hill Park”, a minor hit for Billy Joe Royal in 1969. I’ve always loved the vocal performance and big horn arrangement. The rest of this LP has excellent modern conjunto jams (up there with the best of the era imo) and a hot version from “Proud Mary”.

Check out the full track on the archive YouTube channel, link in bio. Was not previously available online.
