Joe here. 😉

SONGS IN THE KEY OF PHUNK is the first time I’ve put out a full collection of songs on my own. No rules, no limits—just everything I love about music in one place. There’s rock, R&B, spoken word, even a little Portuguese flavor. It’s all in there. The only thing that didn’t make it was my heavy metal roots!

Writing has always been my way of processing life, and the last couple of years gave me a lot to write about. I filled notebooks, phone notes, whatever was nearby. Some of these tracks started as stream-of-consciousness ramblings, and somehow, they turned into songs. And yeah, I used AI to help bring them to life. It’s just another tool—like a weirder, faster version of an engineer/producer/mixer. It hasn’t replaced my instruments, though. If anything, I’m playing more these days.

I don’t sing, but I definitely hear voices in my head—voices that should be singing these songs. Familia Portuguesa? That’s a Mariza or Nelly Furtado track. Keep Dusting needs the raw energy of Thunder Queens or The Linda Lindas. Dazzle & Sparkle? Michael Bublé could kill it. And Never Let Me Down? Well, that’s Jann Arden k.d. lang duet waiting to happen. A guy can dream.

This album also marks the first without Wangles (Doug Elliott), but the spirit of our work together is still there. Making music with him reminded me how much I love this. It’s different doing it solo, but also exciting. I’ve always been the one cheering other artists on—now I’m stepping up with a pen in my own way.

So here it is. Songs In The Key of Phunk is out now. Hope you give it a listen and connect with some of the songs. Thank you!
