Gorgeous day for a Halloween stroll, making new friends. 🥰🎃 with my sweetheart @joephreeagent and our little scruffy pal Monty by @permiekeli

Before it was Vernon, this place had a name. Like many Indigenous Place names, it describes a land feature. Today I honour the survivors of Canada’s residential schools, the one having closed in the 1990’s.
Growing up I had never heard of those schools. The more I have learned as I have read and listened, the more I know why.
Previous generations of settlers tried to erase them, but they are still here, stewarding the land since time immemorial.
I am thankful for their strength, resilience, ecological knowledge, culture and people.
If you haven’t before, please learn the truth. Then we can talk reconciliation.
It is painful, but when we know better, we can do better. I can do better.
For anyone interested, I will soon be hosting a @kinshift.ca Table Talk to gather non-indigenous community to discuss how we can do better together.
Please message me if this sounds like something you would be interested in.

Lots going on. Processed 9lbs of tomatoes this morning and have been doing about 3lbs/day for the last couple of weeks! Might try to find a better balance next year (ie. I don’t HAVE to keep every tomatoes seedling that survives and no need to plant MORE supporting crops!)
What’s so fascinating about growing at the agriculture park this year is that everyone has their prize crops and things that didn’t work at all, even though we all grow in the same soil. We have different pests and successes.
The GREAT thing about this is that trades are happening and then the oven is kept busy roasting it all for soup, sauce and salsas.
Bad fire year but great #garden year despite it.

Apocalypse gardening. Even through the smoke, my little plot is producing. The Scarlett runner bean and cuke tunnel is pretty cute and doing well, the beefsteak tomatoes are giving about 3 per day, the bees are busy pollinating, and the kale I didn’t plant is going buck wild! We even got to eat our first corn from here last night! A joy in the midst of much sadness with wildfires all around. Was glad to hear that the evacuation order and alert for Bradley creek was downgraded last night, but due to a new fire down south that jumped the border, we now have an evacuee with us for the time being.
Everyone is praying for rain. by @permiekeli

That red sun wasn’t visible just 15 minutes later at the farm as more smoke rolled in and made air quality absolute garbage. I don’t like this at all. #wildfires #smokanagan #vernonbc #bradleycreekfire by @permiekeli

Tomatoes looking great! Let’s hope no critters get their dirty little teeth on them before I do! Gold nuggets are little pops of delicious sunshine, and the beefsteak (I believe this one is a “prudens purple”) are fat! #water is now the name of the game on all projects. I wake up thinking about if, I go to sleep thinking about it.

Got to go on a wonderful adventure to the South this past week to work on a new video podcast project with @jeanettewithtrees and captured this heron fishing by the bridge in #okfalls #similkameen land. So much wonderfulness brewing, looking forward to sharing more! by @permiekeli

You don’t get rainbows without rain, and I am thankful for both, as well as for a weekend filled with love, dancing and celebration. #gratitude #love #rainbow by @permiekeli

A momentary red mountaintop a couple of nights ago.

Tomatoes are doing well, needed some fertilizer and weeding. Seems the marigold I seeded hasn’t shown itself, so will have to replant that for pest control.
All the gardens look so different and I love to watch people’s artistic expressions within their squares.
Mine is quite utilitarian and because we can only water Wednesdays and Sundays due to the drought conditions, I use thick organic straw mulch to hold that water in the soil and keep it from evaporating.
There is plenty of pest pressure out there. Many reporting potatoe beetles, we all see quail and ground squirrels or voles and they like tender shoots.
It’s an ongoing battle for our food, and it’s a sobering reminder of how challenging it can be to grow food organically, and deal with so many unknowns like weather and climate anomalies.

Lots of deer pressure this year…having to gently shoo them away every day now. They eat all the fruit, and the young leaves of sumac, rose, strawberries and more.
