"Happy International Fake Oppression Day to everyone who wants complete strangers to know they don't fancy a shag."
- JK Rowling on International Asexuality Day, X, 06/04/2025.
When it feels like the whole world was not made for you, visibility & representation are so important.
Initiatives like International Asexuality Day have raised awareness of our overlooked & misunderstood orientations. Both in conjunction with
@theyasminbenoit , the Stonewall report 'Ace in the UK' (2023) & King's College London's 'Asexuality in the UK' (2025) reveal the particular stigmas & potential harm aces live with by highlighting the lived experiences of aces in UK society & the attitudes of the general population towards us.
So when people like JK Rowling shout to their platform of millions of followers, I look at the language they're using & feel incredibly triggered. "Fake Oppression Day" reflects the fact that a significant portion of the population believe aces do not exist, & that asexuality is a mental illness. Her statement "they don't fancy a shag" has undertones of coercion & correction; that through persistent sexual advances we can "shag" this out.
My being greysexual runs so much deeper than simply not fancying a shag. It has shaped how I see, move through, & experience the world; a world that at times can feel so oppressive & yet is still our world & I love it & my place in it. Realising my greysexuality has been a huge weight lifted off my shoulders & things suddenly make a lot more sense. No billionaire with a platform of bigotry is going to throw that weight back on me.
