~How the sea's lip meets the land at high tide,
flat against this wall of rock. No beach, no middle
ground - just land and then, a centimetre later,
sea.~

°Growing up,
I saw colouring as a test, dexterity
predicting concentration, futures
where I grew up clean & trim, so
my hands shook & I always failed.
I didn't know you could ignore
the lines.°

"Happy International Fake Oppression Day to everyone who wants complete strangers to know they don't fancy a shag."
- JK Rowling on International Asexuality Day, X, 06/04/2025.

When it feels like the whole world was not made for you, visibility & representation are so important.

Initiatives like International Asexuality Day have raised awareness of our overlooked & misunderstood orientations. Both in conjunction with @theyasminbenoit , the Stonewall report 'Ace in the UK' (2023) & King's College London's 'Asexuality in the UK' (2025) reveal the particular stigmas & potential harm aces live with by highlighting the lived experiences of aces in UK society & the attitudes of the general population towards us.

So when people like JK Rowling shout to their platform of millions of followers, I look at the language they're using & feel incredibly triggered. "Fake Oppression Day" reflects the fact that a significant portion of the population believe aces do not exist, & that asexuality is a mental illness. Her statement "they don't fancy a shag" has undertones of coercion & correction; that through persistent sexual advances we can "shag" this out.

My being greysexual runs so much deeper than simply not fancying a shag. It has shaped how I see, move through, & experience the world; a world that at times can feel so oppressive & yet is still our world & I love it & my place in it. Realising my greysexuality has been a huge weight lifted off my shoulders & things suddenly make a lot more sense. No billionaire with a platform of bigotry is going to throw that weight back on me.

"How do asexual people know whether they are gay or straight, I wonder?"
- JK Rowling, X, 06/04/2025.

Imagine living in a worldview so narrow that you assume attraction is based solely on the act of sex.

Call it sexuality, call it magnetism, gravitational pull, moth-to-flame reflex, electro-static impulse, compass point. This navigation towards certain people can encompass (amongst other things) physicality, aesthetics, emotional resonance, & all the senses. When I was researching & reading around asexual identities, feeling more & more seen, what sparked me off the most was the realisation that attraction is dazzlingly multifaceted. I landed on greysexual as the best descriptor for how I feel, because I feel all of this just without a drive for sex, & the boundary between what is & what isn't is blurry. Hence, I live in the grey area. Being ace is a spectrum - some people feel attraction more than others or not at all.

So to answer JK's question, I know I'm greysexual & gay without having sex in the same way someone else might know they are allosexual & straight without having sex - because the presence of a certain someone can bring me joy, their scent stirs me, my heart pounds, & my skin tingles.

*I wondered if Dante & I would ever be allowed to write our names on the map of the world. Other people are given writing instruments - & when they go to school, they are taught to use them. But they didn't give boys like me & Dante pencils or pens or spray paint. They want us to read, but they do not want us to write. What will we write our names with? And where on the map would we write them?*
