Hannah Bohnen (born in 1989 in Duisburg, Germany) lives and works in Berlin. She began her post graduate studies at Kunsthochschule Weißensee in 2020 with Friederike Feldmann which she completed in 2023. In 2020 she graduated her master’s degree in sculpture at Muthesius Kunsthochschule in Kiel, where she studied with Elisabeth Wagner and Michael Beutler. Previously, in the years 1998-2004, she learned classical ballet at Düsseldorf’s Deutsche Oper am Rhein. Since 2017, she has been fellow of Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes and in 2019 was the recipient of the Gottfried Brockmann Prize.
Artist Statement:
My sculptures, surfaces and installations explore the temporal phenomena of movement that permeate our daily life. My work considers the uncertain moments of ephemeral action, adopting dynamic materials and flowing forms as a vocabulary to communicate the evanescent and almost imperceptible life of casual gestures. The artistic intervention serves as a memory of the fleeting and gives permanence to what is otherwise transient.
Materialities are fluid, almost as if time is documented in its inexorable forward motion. Perception blurs, flutters, and reinvents. Through the interaction between viewer and image, changes of direction are constantly altered and interrelated. New mutable spaces and forms emerge, sliding amorphously into each other, detaching from each other, and then finding each other again. The ephemeral can be manifest here at the same time.
The act of capturing the fleeting - making it absolute - is a method of uncovering the passage of time through artistic practice.
