Nigeria Spends Just $1.19 Billion On Food Imports In Six Months Despite Push For Local Production — CBN

Nigeria spent $1.19bn on food imports between January and June 2026, marking an 11.41 per cent increase from the $1.07bn recorded during the same period in 2025, despite efforts to encourage local food production.

An analysis of the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) second-quarter 2026 Statistical Bulletin showed that foreign exchange spent on food imports increased in five of the six months reviewed, with February being the only month that recorded a decline.

Food import spending fell by 2.57 per cent in the first quarter, from $550.79m in 2025 to $536.65m in 2026. However, expenditure rose by 26.38 per cent in the second quarter, climbing from $514.34m to $650m.

The President of the Association of Small Business Owners of Nigeria, Femi Egbesola, blamed the country’s reliance on imported food partly on insecurity and outdated agricultural practices.

“Most of the farmers are no longer on the farms because of insecurity. Many farmlands have been deserted,” Egbesola said, explaining that abandoned farms disrupt the supply of raw materials needed by manufacturers. He called for modern farming equipment, improved technology and mechanisation to increase productivity.

Meanwhile, the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi, warned that allowing food imports, including Thai rice, had weakened local rice mills and left banks with bad loans linked to agricultural investments.

Although imports helped reduce food prices following the removal of the petrol subsidy, Sanusi said the policy had undermined local production and threatened long-term food security.

He urged the government to support low-income households without exposing Nigerian farmers and businesses to overwhelming competition from imported products.

Escala 6x1 - Game Over

Years ago, I would NEVER have had the confidence to post a picture of myself looking like this. Drenched in sweat, no makeup and sweaty hair that's been crying out for a wash for days. But here we are 🥹😂

I've come a long way with my confidence, particularly when it comes to my face.

I've spent years picking it apart, scrutinising every little detail and focusing on the things I'd change. My wrinkles, lines, blemishes, my teeth. You name it, I've probably criticised it at some point.

But something I've come to realise is that the most attractive thing you can wear in a picture isn't perfect skin, a full face of makeup or perfectly styled hair. It's a smile.

You are you. If someone doesn't like how you look or doesn't find you attractive, that's okay.

But there's something incredibly liberating about being 100% authentically yourself and knowing that the people who genuinely matter care about who you are, not whether you've gained another wrinkle or your skin isn't flawless.

And maybe, instead of spending so much time identifying all our flaws, we should start identifying all the things we LOVE about ourselves.

Our kindness, our humour, our resilience, our personalities and the little things that make us who we are. Imagine how differently we'd see ourselves if we gave those things as much attention as the things we wish we could change.

I'm by no means suddenly confident in my own skin. I still have plenty of insecurities and wear makeup most days. But taking this picture last night felt freeing.
For a moment, I looked at myself completely barefaced, sweaty and in desperate need of a hair wash, and I didn't feel the need to pick myself apart. I just accepted what I saw.

Maybe it was the post-cardio high talking, but I'll take it. 😂

You don't have to think you're perfect to accept yourself. Sometimes, you just have to stop looking for everything that's wrong with you and start appreciating the person looking back at you in the mirror.

Anyway, enough of that. That's my talk for the day 😂🩷
