This ARTIST MOON is PRINCE HARVEY!
I first met @princeharveynyc in 2012 at an art show in Bushwick, New York. We connected over style and swapped clothes and talked about music.
Shortly after, Prince recorded a full album inside an Apple Store. He would drop in and use the equipment on display until one day the album was done. The record got a lot of attention because of its artistry mixed with the pirate vibe of working in a store. When I asked Prince how it felt to record next to people just going on with their day, he said:
“I climbed a tree today. When I was climbing the tree I kept going up and up and up. I was picking mangoes. And when I’d picked the ones I wanted and I was ready to get down from the tree, I looked down. And I realised I was really high up. I didn’t think that I had climbed that high. When I’d climbed I hadn’t looked down, because I didn’t have any business looking down. I was just going up. It’s the same when I was recording in the store. I didn’t care about other people. I just knew I had something to do, and I was gonna do it, and I just got it done.”
When he recorded that album, he had a uniform: White shoes, black pants and a variation of 3 different shirts in blue, red and black. He’d wear a black or red leather hat. This would make him get out the door quick - no style decisions in the morning. “I’d wear the hat low so it was obvious I just didn’t want to be bothered. I had the mike low and leaned over it, so nobody could really see what I was doing.”
“I like making music and performances. I’ve also liked making films a lot lately! Having an idea in my head and making it into something that exists in the world, something tangible that other people can experience brings me joy.”
Prince has a unique personal style and his charisma is to die for!
“Performing is very special to me, and I’ve been doing it since I was very young. Being able to tour and have the experience of people reacting to me and the work that I create is very special!”
