A doctor told Max Doppelt that if his mom were Chinese, she could just buy the drug at a pharmacy. So he got on a plane to Shanghai. His mother, Debbie, a 60-year-old New York jeweler, was diagnosed with a rare form of lung cancer in 2023. By late 2024, it had spread to her brain, and the treatments available in the US weren’t good options for her. Max learned that a targeted drug called sunvozertinib, made by a Chinese company, had already been approved in China. He flew to Shanghai and came home with 26 boxes of the medication, which reportedly cost about $10,000. It made a real difference. Along with a few rounds of radiation and some dose adjustments, the drug has kept Debbie’s cancer largely under control for about 19 months, and she’s kept working through it all.
