In this episode, I sit down with Makram Aboul Hosn, one of Lebanon’s most respected double bass players and a cornerstone of the country’s contemporary jazz, fusion, and indie scenes. Known for his unmistakable groove, versatility, and years of collaboration with top Lebanese artists, Makram has helped shape the sound of live music in Beirut.
He has performed on some of Lebanon’s biggest cultural stages including Baalbeck, Beiteddine, and many more, with performances extending across Europe, the Middle East, and the US.
Makram has released two albums, Parallel and Transmigration, the latter recorded just days after the Beirut Port explosion and later listed among All About Jazz’s Top 10 Albums of 2021. His single “Street Window” has passed 2 million views on YouTube.
He holds a Master’s in Jazz from the Prins Claus Conservatorium (Netherlands), teaches Film Music at NDU, Double Bass at USEK, is a faculty member at Metro Academy, and runs Makram’s Blog, where he writes about music and community.
This episode dives into Makram’s story, his approach to sound, his journey through Lebanon’s evolving music ecosystem, and the role of the double bass in shaping who he is both as a musician and a human being.
Makram is also one of the most humble and grounded artists I’ve ever spoken with.
Enjoy this almost spiritual conversation we had.
