‘Here We Shall Rest’ 2025
Over the last few months in the National Sculpture Factory I wanted to make work on how women were depicted in the past in folklore.
All I knew was that I wanted the piece to have bird like feet and tower over people.
I heard the tale about the baba yaga which is a a Slavic folktale about a witch who went around on a house that has chicken legs. She also ate children and was an old hag.
In some stories she was seen as a wise woman who helped the hero. Many times in history wise women were labeled witches.
I decided to make this creature have boobs and a spiky tail to protect itself - it carries around a sleeping person safe inside hoping to find a safe home where they can rest. This is in reference to the housing crisis we face at the moment and the adult fears around that.
The purple and pink colours are similar to those that would’ve been in my bed room as a child. Growing up I was terrified of birds for little reason.
This piece hopes to empower women for who they are and to embrace our fears whether they are irrational childlike fears or more serious adult ones but most importantly not let them define us….
I want to thank everyone
