POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
‘Here We Shall Rest’ 2025

Over the last few months in the National Sculpture Factory I wanted to make work on how women were depicted in the past in folklore.
All I knew was that I wanted the piece to have bird like feet and tower over people.
I heard the tale about the baba yaga which is a a Slavic folktale about a witch who went around on a house that has chicken legs. She also ate children and was an old hag.
In some stories she was seen as a wise woman who helped the hero. Many times in history wise women were labeled witches.
I decided to make this creature have boobs and a spiky tail to protect itself - it carries around a sleeping person safe inside hoping to find a safe home where they can rest. This is in reference to the housing crisis we face at the moment and the adult fears around that.
The purple and pink colours are similar to those that would’ve been in my bed room as a child. Growing up I was terrified of birds for little reason.
This piece hopes to empower women for who they are and to embrace our fears whether they are irrational childlike fears or more serious adult ones but most importantly not let them define us….

I want to thank everyone @nationalsculpturefactory for all yer help and support!! <3

‘Miss Lust Garden’ (2025)
This year while doing research into different Celtic myths and Irish history I stumbled upon a stone carving known as a Sheela Na Gig, these are 12th century stone carvings found around Ireland of what are thought to have been fertility goddesses. They are often depicted displaying their vulvas. This expression of the female body as a celebration of its empowerment and possiblity for it to viewed in this way made me want to create my own using textiles, welding among other processes. I used a lot of waste materials like old clothes and curtains, wrapping and draping them to the welded structure.
From this project, I have learned a lot about womanhood, Irish history and folklore and most importantly myself. Taking on this project meant a lot to me, to discover more about myself as a person and as an artist. The repetitive and tedious processes gave me time to think and reflect while working on a monument of a divine feminine Irish figure like a Sheela Na Gig. While I was doing these long processes it allowed me the time to think into different parts of women’s history and different folklore that I might not have had the chance to do otherwise. I’ve always wanted to create art that is playful, creative and brings people joy. Through this immersive return to the womb experience I hope that this has been made a reality.

If you would like to experience this piece of artwork in person and more incredibly talented artists. Please come along to our degree show exhibition opening on the 31st of May to the 8th of June. taken in Limerick School of Art & Design TUS by @slugsinmysocks

Ciara Sheehan is a 22-year-old artist from County Kerry and is currently based in Limerick. She works with diverse media, including sculpture, ceramics, metal, textiles, sound and digital drawing. Her work draws influence from Celtic mythology and contemporary feminist discourse and her own lived experiences. Ciara’s immersive dream-like installation are a form of carnivalesque storytelling, re-imagining and deconstructing familiar folktales. Through these fantasy sculptures, Ciara presents a joyful celebration of feminist identity and the process of making—while acknowledging the contradictory qualities that often accompany these experiences by @slugsinmysocks

Title: Neach Neamhshaolta

This piece of work was an artwork I made in a collaboration project I got the pleasure of doing as part of an internship with Vanessa Barragão. It was an amazing experience to be able to work in a studio space with such a passionate team and learn different techniques and skills. I’m grateful to Vanessa and her team for giving me such a beneficial and positive experience.
The piece was a collaboration of Vanessa’s techniques and process while using a colourful aesthetic that I normally use in my own work. by @slugsinmysocks
