With all the conversation about restrictions on international students in Canada, it felt like the right time to share a project we just wrapped with UBC Science.

I recently spoke with students from Egypt, India, China, and several other countries, hearing firsthand what it’s like to build a new chapter here. What stood out wasn’t struggle, but optimism: finding community through labs and clubs, discovering mentors, and creating a sense of home in small but meaningful ways.

These stories are a good reminder of who’s actually at the centre of the policy debates. They’re not numbers on a cap, they are curious, motivated young scientists and students who chose Canada because they believed they could grow, contribute, and belong here.

If we’re going to reshape international education, their experiences should be the starting point. They add depth, diversity, and genuine energy to our campuses and communities.

Thank you to UBC Science and the students who shared their journeys with us. Produced by UBC Studios
