What does it take to bring back an icon of the wilderness? 🐻
A short documentary I worked on features The Joint Nations Grizzly Bear Initiative and will premiere as an official selection at the @bceffestival ! ✨

This project celebrates the cultural significance of grizzly bears to First Nations in southwest British Columbia and the efforts to steward their recovery in the North Cascades region.

The production itself was a collaborative effort, mirroring the spirit of the Initiative. Our team at @ubcstudios worked hand-in-hand with the teams involved, researchers, and many others to bring this story to life.

As always, I’m thankful for the opportunity to share this journey and amplify the voices behind this vital work.

With all the conversation about restrictions on international students in Canada, it felt like the right time to share a project we just wrapped with UBC Science.

I recently spoke with students from Egypt, India, China, and several other countries, hearing firsthand what it’s like to build a new chapter here. What stood out wasn’t struggle, but optimism: finding community through labs and clubs, discovering mentors, and creating a sense of home in small but meaningful ways.

These stories are a good reminder of who’s actually at the centre of the policy debates. They’re not numbers on a cap, they are curious, motivated young scientists and students who chose Canada because they believed they could grow, contribute, and belong here.

If we’re going to reshape international education, their experiences should be the starting point. They add depth, diversity, and genuine energy to our campuses and communities.

Thank you to UBC Science and the students who shared their journeys with us. Produced by UBC Studios taken in University of British Columbia Vancouver by @riverridgeprod

What would you do if you were suddenly given time you didn’t think you had?

That question stayed with me throughout a recent project of videos produced by @ubcstudios with the BC Cancer Foundation helping to share stories from their Personalized OncoGenomics (POG) Program.

Every patient I met is living with a rare, late-stage cancer. Many were told they were out of options. Except… POG, a research program that was willing to look deeper.

What struck me wasn’t just the science, it was the ripple effect of what this work creates. A common thread ran through every conversation: connection and experience.

Because of POG, many of these people are travelling again. They’re spending unhurried time with partners, kids, and friends. They’re seeing places they thought they’d never see. They’re doing the quiet, ordinary, deeply human things that become extraordinary when you didn’t expect to still be here doing them.

For some, POG is helping actively manage and treat their cancer in ways that once seemed impossible. For others, where outcomes are less certain, there’s a different kind of peace, knowing the data from their cancer may help future patients find answers sooner than they did.

This work isn’t something I’ll ever see as just a project. It belongs to the patients who trusted us with their time and their stories: Basia, Carmen, Christian, Karen, Lesley, Lynn, and Zuri. Time they know is valuable. Time they could have spent anywhere else, with anyone else.

So, thank you for your honesty, your generosity, and for reminding me that behind every data point is a life being lived fully, intentionally, and with meaning. #scicomm #cancer #science #documentary taken in Vancouver, British Columbia by @riverridgeprod

What does a home built for wildfire resilience look like? And what happens when Indigenous knowledge and modern design come together to imagine in?

🎥 @bceffestival starting Nov 1.

In the wake of the devastating 2017 wildfires, the Yunesit’in community decided to rethink what self-sufficiency and safety could mean on their own terms. Working in collaboration with @universityofbc and @ubcsala they designed a fire-resistant, culturally grounded home built for the realities of a changing climate.
Our short film produced by @ubcstudios shares this story of innovation, sovereignty, and hope.
