The Japanese Paper Place @thejppofficial sent me a konnyaku kit to turn any paper into a strong fabric-like material, called momigami or kyoseishi! This is a game changer for bookbinding. The papers don’t need to be crumpled but this is a common practice and it does help with kneading the starch into the paper fibres. I personally enjoy the texture too.

▶️ Watch the deep dive on washi for bookbinding, featuring Sigrid Blohm, Fine Paper Specialist on my YouTube channel.

🍠 Konnyaku kits are now available in my shop: https://www.bittermelonbindery.com/shop/paper-collections

Free shipping to the US and Canada, and low cost shipping internationally (untracked). If you know it’s possible for mail from the US to get lost on the way to you, I recommend opting for tracked shipping!

Reposted reel with the correct mixing ratio.

So interesting! I would like to try this. Unfortunately I haven't found a webshop or such, which sells this konnyaku powder in Europe.

Konjac powder is produced from the corm of the Konjac, a plant native to East Asia. The powder is rich in Glucomannan, a polysaccharide that absorbs large amounts of water and forms a gel. Because of this property it is used as a thickener, gelling agent, dietary fiber, and occasionally in craft processes such as paper treatment.

@bittermelonbindery how long do you leave the paper aside in the crumpled state, before flattening it to dry?
