Yemaya

“May the wave wash over me, and take me home.”

Mediums: Repatriated Baule Elephant African Harvest mask, resin, wood, vintage vinyl records, cowrie shells, LED lights, poetry, Polaroid, cyanotype, and toy horn.

This shadow box contains a Baule Elephant Harvest Mask, a symbol of strength and abundance, and the blue painted hue honors Yemaya, the Orisha of the ocean and motherhood. Vintage vinyl records and cowrie shells evoke themes of cultural memory, spiritual connection, and prosperity, while the toy horn is a nod to ancestral voices. Photographs of my mother and a poem dedicated to her are embedded deep in the resin connecting my earthly mother with the mother of the oceans. Together, these elements celebrate Yemaya’s nurturing and transformative abilities through the power of love.
