“AFRODITE in the Veil”
Created February 2024 by @zoidham
Medium: Acrylic paint and graphite on rolled canvas
Size: 10.5ft x 19ft

To celebrate the birthday of the late great W.E.B. DuBois I have created Afrodite in the Veil, one of many new works from my upcoming installation “ZOID ROOM: THE VEIL”. Afrodite critiques the gaze of Western art history while uplifting the “second sight” of Black Americans. Painting the goddess “Aphrodite” as a towering Black woman at leisure addresses the lack of representation of Black women in art, creates a much needed reminder to rest, and makes a new monument for Black American Culture (since they ain’t taking down the racist ones …) Afrodite lounges within a swirling dimension of Pan African colors while gazing upon her Black world. The world is filled by the words of W.E.B. Dubois from his book “The Souls of Black Folks”, and imparts the wisdom of “the veil”, which helps Black Americans see the world for what it truly is, and use our insight to aid all oppressed peoples in our shared struggle for freedom.

Happy Birthday Ancestor and Happy Black History Month Kinfolk. Keep rising and shining, and remember: The future, like the past, is Black. -ZAH

shouts out to my partner in art: @s_miyah ♥️🖤💚

The Burneys

Once upon a time, Under the willows draped in Spanish moss and surrounded by Florida waters, the sweet Seminole princess and her smiling Tulsa prince jumped the broom and forever said I do….

Mane twas beautiful kinfolk!
Family, food, music, and new memories.
I think the ritual healed and inspired all of us
And I’m grateful I found my dancing Queen
And we gon dance forever
Forever? Forever ever? Forever ever?!
Forever! Haha zahhhhhhhhhhhhh!

Love you wife! Love ya’ll Kinfolk!
Now let’s dance across the cosmos!

Thank you to everyone who came out to the opening of BLKRAINBOW. It meant a lot to see work from the past two years in conversation with itself and with all of you. Moments like this remind me why I make and push me toward what’s next in the studio.

BLKRAINBOW is a new solo exhibition exploring how Black life evolves in the wake of ecological and societal collapse. Inspired by the black rainbow, a rare phenomenon formed through smoke and ash, the work imagines a visual field where destruction bends into color and possibility. Drawing on the idea that we are shaped by history even as we try to reshape it, the exhibition asks how memory might interrupt our destructive patterns and help us imagine new futures.

Grateful to @bmoca and @northglennarts for the opportunity and support.

The show is on view through late June

Notes from a Black sun:

Some of us were there
We saw it, we felt it, we experienced it.
And knowing it grew from mud and blood
We unwilling witnesses of a miracle
Still question the origins of that magical moment— if it truly is, or if one’s mind dreamt it?

It is the artist who make us fail to see the difference. It is the artist who knows, there is no difference.

So If I may cast a frame
And quilt the void with a pixel of light
Upon that unfolding plane
I breathe our story to life.
Reality, that most popular dream,
The photons medium of choice,
For the artist, what is real becomes a quest
Into images yet born of voice.

Thus upon this road I lay long
Hoping I find my song
Among the hum’s
of Harlem’s strong.

Black Amerikhan

ZAM Show 001:

ZAM the Black Archive is a unique approach to history and the act of collecting. I wanted to create a sonic crossroads where genres and eras can be fused together, making novel connections. In the end I found myself performing the act of sampling originated in the art form of Hip Hop.

With the punch of a button Biggie meets MLK both speaking to an American dream while Malcolm and Stokely add flames to the fire of Black power which burns away the lies of that dream.

This is ZAM a weapon for Black Amerikhans. Happy Black history month kinfolk, keep rising and shining. More art, more life. - ZAH
