My big bro, @scottwhiteart came by the studio today to catch up. Scott is (unwittingly) one of my mentors, as well as a legendary tattooer, shop owner, artist, vocalist of several dope bands, activist, cooldad and husband ™️, etc. Scott and I met about a dozen years ago and clicked right away. Turns out we both grew up in the small town of DeLand, FL. Even though I lag a decade behind, our common interests of art, hardcore music, skateboard culture, odd collectibles, and social progress are only skewed by our timelines. It’s clear we would have been best friends in school were I a bit older.

Anyway, several years ago he said he had something for me but I didn’t remember. He gave it to me today and it’s the newspaper from our hometown the day of the Challenger disaster, which launched at KSC, an hour away from where we grew up. My mom worked at the DeLand Sun News for a while in the late 70s. Im a casual collector of vintage space stuff so he knew this one was pretty specific for me, thanks for the gift, buddy!

If you are like me, from central Florida and care about tattoos, punk, and art culture in our area, folks like Scott are a big reason why these subcultures I’ve mentioned have been able to live-on meaningfully for decades in our secondary market. We’re able to get world class tattoos here, see endless underground bands each week, and see rad artwork year round because they’re compelled to grow ideas here long term, when the fads come and go.
