“ You cant major in a hobby “. Something that teachers, ex friends, and even I told myself for years. Upon my arrival to Alabama A&M University I didn’t have much idea what I wanted to major in let alone what career I wanted to pursue. I just knew I had a one scholarship, faith in my heart, and a dream of being the one to make it out. If you know me, you know that I can pretty much master any skill if I applied myself. Some would call me “trial and trial” instead of “trail and error”. From hair and makeup, to math and science, to crocheting and dancing..I could pretty much do it all. But being a jack of all trades is hard when you’re constantly being told that you can only choose ONE thing to make a career out of. This was hard for me because it felt impossible to merge all my talents together AND create a career from them. So, I entered college undecided. That was until I stumbled across the Family & Consumer Sciences Department (thanks to Dr.Dixon 💓).

This department was my home. Here, I didn’t have to shrink myself to just ONE thing. Here, I could be all my crafts in one and be praised for my skills. Here, I could be the party planner and the nutritionist. Here, my “hobbies” are highlighted as careers just as big as any others. Here, is where I was prayed for, believed in, helped, and loved. To my professors, my classmates, and my advisors I say THANK YOU for allowing me to be me without having to choose one part of me to only showcase. Being apart of this department felt like a family (no pun intended). I am truly blessed to have been placed in such an environment that allowed me to morph into the woman and soon to be graduate you see today. 💓
