The Shohei Ohtani 2013 BBM Classic “Above Average” is one of the most respected early Japanese Ohtani cards in the hobby especially in a highly coveted POP 3 PSA 10 grade. To serious collectors, this isn’t just another pre rookie… it represents the beginning of the modern global baseball card era.
What makes this card important:
• 2013 was Ohtani’s true rookie year with the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters in NPB before MLB ever saw him. These BBM issues are his earliest mainstream professional cards.
• “Above Average” inserts were NOT mass produced like modern ultra print run products. Early BBM inserts had significantly smaller distribution and much tougher gem rates due to print lines, foil scratching, edge chipping, and centering issues.
• The holo/fireworks foil pattern on this card is notoriously condition sensitive. A PSA 10 on this issue is extremely difficult because the reflective surface exposes every imperfection under grading light.
