The BEA rankings are based on cumulative student success in the Festival of Media Arts, a highly competitive national juried competition recognizing excellence in areas like audio, video, journalism, sports, documentary, interactive media, and scriptwriting.

South African Pastor And Wife Arrested After 200 People Were Allegedly Found Chained And Held In Inhumane Conditions At Illegal Rehab Centre The South African Police Service (SAPS) has arrested a 59-year-old pastor and his 58-year-old wife over the alleged kidn@pping of about 200 people found at an unregistered rehabilitation centre in Siyabuswa, Mpumalanga. The couple were arrested on Friday, October 16, 2026, after officials from the Department of Social Development sought police assistance following an inspection of the facility on Thursday, October 15. According to police, preliminary investigations revealed that the couple allegedly operated the centre without the required registration and authorisation and failed to meet health and safety standards. Reports indicated that some people were living in overcrowded rooms, with some allegedly chained to one another. Several reportedly had sores on their bodies, while the Department of Social Development described the conditions as “gross inhumane conditions”. Fourteen people were taken for medical treatment during the operation. The couple face charges of kidn@pping, operating an unregistered treatment centre in violation of the Prevention of and Treatment for Substance Abuse Act, and breaching health and safety regulations under relevant environmental health by-laws and the National Health Act. SAPS said experienced detectives and specialised units had been assigned to investigate the case under provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Apaphia Modise. Police added that further arrests and charges were possible as investigations continued. The suspects are expected to appear before the Mdutjana Magistrates’ Court in Siyabuswa on Monday, October 19, 2026. Modise commended the officials and police officers involved in the operation for their efforts to protect those found at the facility and ensure justice for the alleged victims. The police have not disclosed the couple’s identities. The allegations against them have not been proven in court.
