โขโขThis image documents a male specimen of Orthetrum coerulescens (Libellulidae), a dragonfly typical of sun-exposed freshwater environments. The photograph was taken in full afternoon activity, as this family (and related taxa) is not strictly crepuscular or limited to early morning hours.
The adult male is recognisable by the uniform blue pruinosity covering the entire abdomen: a waxy secretion that develops with maturity and masks the underlying cuticular coloration. This is one of the main diagnostic traits of the genus Orthetrum.
In detail, the head shows large, highly developed compound eyes, typical of aerial predators, providing a wide field of vision for detecting flying prey. The reduced antennae and strong mandibles reflect a high level of predatory specialisation on small flying insects.โขโข
