It is one of the most emblematic saproxylic beetles, easily recognized by its robust body, distinctive mottled grey-black coloration, and long antennae.

Morimus asper is a protected species under the European Union Habitats Directive and Italian legislation, highlighting the importance of conserving mature deciduous forests and deadwood habitats for its survival. Indeed, the species is closely associated with mature broadleaf forests, where its larvae develop for several years inside decaying wood.

Adults are active mainly from late spring to summer and are most frequently observed on fallen trunks, tree stumps, and deadwood, particularly during the evening and at night.••

Orthetrum coerulescens ♂️ ✓

••This image documents a male specimen of Orthetrum coerulescens (Libellulidae), a dragonfly typical of sun-exposed freshwater environments. The photograph was taken in full afternoon activity, as this family (and related taxa) is not strictly crepuscular or limited to early morning hours.

The adult male is recognisable by the uniform blue pruinosity covering the entire abdomen: a waxy secretion that develops with maturity and masks the underlying cuticular coloration. This is one of the main diagnostic traits of the genus Orthetrum.

In detail, the head shows large, highly developed compound eyes, typical of aerial predators, providing a wide field of vision for detecting flying prey. The reduced antennae and strong mandibles reflect a high level of predatory specialisation on small flying insects.••

Regiscolia maculata.♀️

••This image documents a female specimen of Megascolia maculata (Scoliidae), one of the largest wasps occurring in Europe. This species is typically associated with warm open habitats, gardens, woodland edges and areas rich in dead wood, where females search for beetle larvae hidden underground or inside decaying trunks.

Females of Megascolia maculata are powerful parasitoids and play an important ecological role by naturally regulating populations of large scarab beetles. After locating a host larva, the female temporarily paralyzes it and lays a single egg on its body, providing a living food source for the developing offspring.

This female specimen was observed on Friday morning outside my garden shortly after severe bad weather, likely taking advantage of the warmer and more humid conditions following the storm.••

••This image documents a female specimen of Parainocellia bicolor (Inocelliidae), one of the few snakefly species (order Raphidioptera) found in Italy. Unlike species belonging to the family Raphidiidae, members of the Inocelliidae lack ocelli, a key feature that distinguishes the two families.

Although it occurs in several areas of the Italian Peninsula, P. bicolor is not an easy species to encounter, despite being locally established. Adults are active for only a short period and are mainly associated with woodland habitats, where they often go unnoticed. 

The specimen photographed is a female, recognizable by its long ovipositor, which is used to lay eggs in bark crevices, where the larvae will later develop.••

O. armatus inhabits woodlands, forest edges, and other vegetation-rich habitats. Adults are primarily nocturnal and climb vegetation to feed on the leaves of a variety of plants. The larvae, in contrast, develop in the soil, where they feed on roots and organic matter before pupating.

Adults can be observed from early spring through summer, but during the day they remain hidden beneath stones, bark, leaf litter, or dense vegetation, making daytime encounters relatively uncommon.••

Agrilus hastulifer. ✓

The larvae develop beneath the bark of various Quercus species, where they excavate characteristic galleries in the phloem of weakened or declining trees. Only at the end of their development do they penetrate superficially into the wood to construct a pupal chamber. 

Adults are active mainly from late spring to summer, feeding on oak foliage and most often observed on warm, sunny days. Owing to its secretive habits and its close association with well preserved woodland habitats, Agrilus hastulifer is regarded as an uncommon species.••

Parasitized larva of Papilio machaon ✓

A rare and poorly documented field observation, likely seldom reported in photographic records.

This image documents a larva of Papilio machaon (Papilionidae) showing external structures attributable to a parasitoid organism, most likely an endoparasitoid in the final stage of its developmental cycle.

The host remains alive and partially active during this phase, indicating that the parasitoid completed its internal development before emerging and transitioning to external pupation on the surface of the host body.

This interaction is consistent with parasitoid strategies in Hymenoptera (e.g. Braconidae), where larval development occurs inside the host, followed by synchronized emergence and external pupation while the host remains temporarily viable.
This represents a highly specialized host parasitoid interaction that ultimately leads to host death at the end of the parasitoid developmental cycle.

••This is my current interpretation based on discussion with entomologists friends. Further feedback from specialists is welcome and appreciated••

Larva Chrysopa sp. ✓

••This image shows a tiny lacewing larva belonging to the genus Chrysopa (Chrysopidae), measuring approximately 1/2 mm in length. Despite its extremely small size, it feeds on aphids, scale insects, whiteflies and other soft-bodied arthropods, playing a fundamental role.

Many chrysopid larvae adopt an extraordinary camouflage strategy by carrying on their backs a covering made of prey remains, plant fragments, lichens and other debris, as can be seen in this photograph. This debris covering protects them from predators and allows them to approach prey without being detected. The material is held in place by specialized hooked setae on the body.

The robust sickle shaped mandibles are used to seize prey, inject digestive enzymes and suck out the liquefied body contents. Development generally includes three larval instars, followed by the construction of a silken cocoon in which metamorphosis takes place, eventually giving rise to the elegant winged adult.••
