From this angle, the northern end of Kalsoy looks like a vast fortress rising out of the Atlantic. But the photograph hides something interesting: Kalsoy is really a long, narrow ribbon of land, with steep mountains squeezed between two coastlines.

That contrast is part of what makes the island so extraordinary. It feels substantial and immovable when seen from the air, yet on the ground there is often very little land between one sheer drop and the other. Roads and tunnels cling to the island’s spine, while cliffs such as these take the full force of the North Atlantic waves 🌊

Perspective can completely change the story a landscape tells. Here, the narrow island disappears behind its own mountains, leaving only its wild, monumental ending 🗻
