For months before visiting the Faroe Islands, we had one hike saved in our plans simply as “the best hike ever”. This was because I really couldn’t pronounce the real name — Villingadalsfjall 😂 But after reading an article that called it one of the best hikes in Faroe, that’s what we called it every time we talked about it. And honestly it didn’t disappoint! 😍 Every step higher revealed a better view. Infront of us stretched the dramatic islands of Viðoy and Borðoy, with deep fjords cutting through the landscape and mountains rising almost vertically from the ocean. It was the kind of view that felt quintessentially Faroese - wild, rugged, and completely unreal. The hike actually continues all the way towards Cape Enniberg, one of the highest sea cliffs in the world with a staggering 754m drop straight into the Atlantic Ocean. I would have loved to make it that far but the weather had other plans. And honestly, we didn’t need to reach the top. If you ever see a flash of yellow while walking through a rainforest on the east coast of Australia, it's probably one of these guys—an eastern yellow robin 💛 They don't bother searching for a horizontal branch to alight on. This is a characteristic 'hero' pose of theirs, hanging sideways like gravity doesn't affect them 🦸🏻‍♂️ Despite the name, they are not close relatives of the familiar European robin. For one second, they belonged to the same story. They were strangers, moving independently through the city, carrying different things and heading towards different destinations. Then something beyond the frame caught both their attention. That brief shared reaction was enough to connect them. Some waterfalls impress you with their size, others with their power. But Brúarfoss stands out for something completely different — its colour 💙 The water here is an almost unreal shade of blue, created by glacial melt carrying silt over the dark volcanic rock. This was our first proper day exploring Iceland after spending a few days in Reykjavík and what a way to kick off the adventure! After leaving Brúarfoss we continued around the Golden Circle, experiencing what felt like every season in a single day 😅 We had the full Iceland experience - sunshine, snow, hail, gale-force winds ☀️❄️🌧️💨 At one point all six of us squeezed into one of our five-seater cars to eat lunch 🥪 while waiting for a snowstorm to pass. It was the perfect introduction to Iceland. Wild, unpredictable, and unlike anywhere else I’ve ever travelled. Over the next two weeks we drove all around Iceland photographing countless waterfalls, each with its own personality. Some were taller, wider, or more powerful. From this angle, the northern end of Kalsoy looks like a vast fortress rising out of the Atlantic. But the photograph hides something interesting: Kalsoy is really a long, narrow ribbon of land, with steep mountains squeezed between two coastlines. That contrast is part of what makes the island so extraordinary. It feels substantial and immovable when seen from the air, yet on the ground there is often very little land between one sheer drop and the other. Roads and tunnels cling to the island’s spine, while cliffs such as these take the full force of the North Atlantic waves 🌊 Perspective can completely change the story a landscape tells. You could walk almost right past Wallace Hut 🏡 before you saw it. Hidden among the twisted snow gums of the Bogong High Plains, it became known to early bushwalkers and skiers as the ‘Seldom Seen Inn’ because the trees concealed it until travellers were almost upon it. From this viewpoint, it still seems to appear suddenly through the branches. Built by the Wallace brothers in 1889, it is the oldest surviving hut in the Victorian Alps. Yet its survival was far from assured. After the State Electricity Commission had finished using it, the corrugated iron covering the original shingle roof was due to be removed. The Victorian Rover Scouts stepped in and paid £12 10 shillings for the iron so the hut would remain protected. The Rover Scouts were the senior section of the Scout movement, young men trained in bushcraft, leadership and practical community service. Their motto was simply, ‘Service’. In this case, that service helped preserve a small but precious piece of Australian high-country history. Seeing a glacier from the ground is incredible but seeing one from above is something else entirely 💙 From this perspective you begin to appreciate details that are impossible to see on foot. Endless crevasses weave their way through the ice, creating intricate patterns that stretch for kilometres. My favourite is how you can really appreciate the brilliant shades of blue. Some of the crevasses are so deep they fade to almost black. A glacier is really like a giant piece of living artwork 😍 They have always left me in awe! Even from a distance they seem unreal, sitting amongst the mountains like frozen rivers. But as you get closer you begin to grasp their immense scale. I had visited this glacier back in 2017 and when I returned in 2025, the difference was impossible to ignore. The ice had noticeably retreated 😔 It was a reminder that these incredible landscapes are constantly changing, and in many places, slowly disappearing. That's Tony, Maddie’s dad, on the cliffs of Kalsoy. He’s a real mountain goat 🐐 — not the GOAT, just a goat. He simply loves to climb. On location, he has a habit of quietly disappearing, and the next thing you know someone spots him standing on top of an escarpment, a ridge, or some giant boulder 🪨 the rest of us hadn’t even considered attempting. The rest of us are usually struggling to keep up, but Tony never makes anyone feel like we’re slowing him down — even though we are. Constantly. Abi and I have shared some wonderful adventures with the Walcher family now — the UK, Iceland, the Faroe Islands, Papua New Guinea, and plenty of Australian road trips. Maddie is the organiser extraordinaire, and between her and Abi, our trips somehow end up cheap, long, adventure-filled and planned with military precision 🪖 Wild places, tight budgets, big laughs, questionable weather ⛈️ and Tony somewhere up ahead on a rock. The view of Tibrogargan rising out of the morning mist was breathtaking ⛰️ The sunrise was burning quietly behind it 🌄 But capturing the view was never going to be enough. It needed to be grounded by the wet vegetation in the foreground — the leaves, the scrub, the small details underfoot 🌿 Without them, this could almost be anywhere. With them, you feel the mountain beneath you, the damp morning air, and the wildness of the lookout itself.
