a pair of JrF d-series+ hydrophones listening to the sea of Sagami Bay filtering through the sand

The technique of placing hydrophones in sand is something Jez has been doing since building his first hydrophone in the 80's & it came from his interest in listening to not only the obvious sounds but to those beneath surfaces and through materials. To sounds outside of our attention & at micro-levels. In this context to the power of tidal systems sits alongside the minute sounds of sand particles shifting.

also, importantly, it's something Jez & Pheobe did when she was younger, having fun listening at local beaches along with eating ice cream and looking for nice pebbles & shells. In Japan, during a residency in 2023 we spent time around Sagami Bay, with Pheobe starting work on her piece 'Sour Bay', based around listening to aquatic species in the bay & research into the effects of salinity levels around Enoshima island.
