we're pleased to announce that booking is now open for;

murmuration # 8 - gathering of listeners - sensing liminality

14th - 21st May 2027

with

JEZ RILEY FRENCH
PHEOBE RILEY LAW

& guest artists (tba)

+ private chef

Bràghaid Albann, Scotland

for more information see;

https://jezrileyfrench.co.uk/murmuration-2027.php

The cost includes 7 nights accommodation, with full catering by our private chef & access to all group activities, talks and practical demonstrations.

Alongside listening sessions and field recording in the locale, we'll explore different approaches to placing sounds within other spaces, re-listening, composing and editing located sound, and sensing liminality as material for other formats inc. graphic / text based scores. We will also explore via extended techniques using contact microphones, ecoutic microphones, hydrophones etc.

The 8th in a series of unique trips curated to ensure both a sharing of diverse experience and knowledge of sound, situation and place, and an atmosphere that is relaxed, inspiring, inclusive and open. Each trip is led by artists working at the forefront of their respective fields, to compliment our always fascinating group of participants.

Our theme for the 2027 trip is sensing liminality - focusing on how we can re-evaluate the limits of our experience of spaces and situations that we often consider to be between others. By shifting our attention, alongside developments in both technology and approaches to situated listening, new possibilities push the borders of our perception, and in turn our connection to place.

For the 2027 trip we're also venturing to a new location in the remarkable landscape of the Bràghaid Albann region of Scotland.

Our trips build communities of listeners in a flexible week together. Doing this differently we react, individually and as a group, to the ever changing environment at the time, with practical sessions, skill sharing sessions, talks and multiple additional discussions that develop to fit the interests of the group.

field recording of a JrF c-series+ microphone listening to a plant holder filtering the sounds of a neighbourhood in Portugal.

Using a normal strong-pull magnet, the wide frequency response of the c-series+ contact microphone, allows it to listen in a similar way to a geophone, but with more detail.

Jez listening to aquatic insects in the Paiva river, Portugal during a residency in 2010.

(with apologies for Instagram's compression of the sound!)

It might surprise some to know that even in 2010 the number of artists / recordists listening to sounds in fresh water was very small indeed. Even scientific research was yet to really consider the importance of such sounds.

Jez developed the d-series hydrophones as calibrated for fresh & salt water environments (as well as for use in other liquids, ice, sand & soil etc), & a recording from this trip was the first archived in a European public collection to document the call & response of aquatic insects.

In the years since JrF hydrophones have become a significant part of sound culture, being utilised widely in exhibitions, films, tv series, games sound design, live performances, sound ecology studies, compositions and albums.

JrF microphones - built with ethics, for the global sound community.

a pair of JrF d-series+ hydrophones listening to the sea of Sagami Bay filtering through the sand

The technique of placing hydrophones in sand is something Jez has been doing since building his first hydrophone in the 80's & it came from his interest in listening to not only the obvious sounds but to those beneath surfaces and through materials. To sounds outside of our attention & at micro-levels. In this context to the power of tidal systems sits alongside the minute sounds of sand particles shifting.

also, importantly, it's something Jez & Pheobe did when she was younger, having fun listening at local beaches along with eating ice cream and looking for nice pebbles & shells. In Japan, during a residency in 2023 we spent time around Sagami Bay, with Pheobe starting work on her piece 'Sour Bay', based around listening to aquatic species in the bay & research into the effects of salinity levels around Enoshima island.

JrF d-series+ hydrophones, in the soil around the roots of carex pundula / sedge - recorded by @jezrileyfrench assisted by @pheobelaw

unlike other commercially available hydrophones on the market, the JrF d-series+ is calibrated for fresh and salt water sounds, meaning they are also extremely sensitive to sounds in soil, sand and other materials.

They were built to expand the use of hydrophones beyond the sciences and since the early 2000's have been used in thousands of art works, installations, performances, compositions, films, radio and tv programmes, games, ecoacoustic research projects and the wider sciences.

built by listeners for the community.
