This is one of the rarest and most dangerous sounds you can hear in a thunderstorm.

While climbing high on an exposed mountain, a climber recorded an eerie crackling and buzzing sound just moments before a lightning strike. This phenomenon is caused by an intense electric field building in the air, which can make metal gear, ropes, or even hair begin to buzz or crackle.

It’s a serious warning sign that lightning may be about to strike nearby. If you ever hear this sound outdoors, especially on exposed terrain, experts recommend getting to lower ground immediately if it’s safe to do so.

The footage offers a chilling reminder of just how quickly thunderstorms can become life-threatening in the mountains.
