SAN DIEGO ZOO LOOKBOOK

For my kiddos birthday he asked to go to the @sandiegozoo. I struggle a bit with the whole thing, seeing animals in captivity is kind of a bummer. Conversely, I understand that many of them were born in captivity, so releasing them would be a problem. I love pushing my photography and shooting new domains. Here is a day at the zoo...

GORILLAS

My favorite. Their eyes are haunting, I wish I could tap into what they were thinking. I tried to capture their expression, their eyes, bring out all that I love about them.

ORANGUTANS

They always give me philosopher of the Great Apes vibes. Watching them use tools to get food and shield their eyes from the sun reminds you of how similar we truly are.

BONOBOS

We share 98.7% of our DNA with these guys. I got to watch this guy walk to the other side of the enclosure, grab a blanket, throw it over his shoulders, climb down a ladder, carefully lay out his blanket in a shaded corner, and lie down to rest away from the heat. It was surreal to watch and humbling in a strange way.

LIONS, TIGERS, (and next slide) BEARS

I am not an expert by any means, but multiple big cats were just pacing in front of the cage, and it felt anxious and sad. It's hard not to imbue human emotions on to animals, and I understand that can be problematic, but, I also believe in trying to understand is always better than not trying at all.

MAMMALS

When you see it... 😂😂.

MAMMALS Part II

Maybe the most artistic slide, photography wise. It is so fun to try and find a clever way to capture these guys in their unique enclosures. The Hippos freak me out, they are a top 10 most deadly animal, capsizing ships every year.

BIRDS

This was the hardest group to shoot.. Minus the duck. You can tell who has the eyes to survive in the wild looking for them in the trees. Not one of my strong suits, personally. Congratulations if you made it to the end, I hope you enjoyed the photos!
