84-year-old Lol sits down with her granddaughter to reflect on her early experiences of arriving in the UK.

In this clip, she speaks honestly about the shock of seeing different attitudes towards hygiene when she first came over.

Her story is told with humour, disbelief and honesty, but underneath it is a powerful reminder of what many from the Windrush generation had to navigate quietly while trying to build a life in a new country.

These are the small details that history books often miss, but families remember.

If she was 19 when she arrived in the UK it was a post war period and most people in England were living in a poverty state. Even in the early 70s as a white girl growing up in the Grove we had an outdoor toilet, would chase the rag and bone man down the road, we'd get our paraffin delivered down our street as we all had paraffin heaters back then - no central heating. Cold, damp flats were part of our reality back then, and we all lived it side by side playing on the streets, chalking up the pavement for hopscotch and using old bits of rope for skipping. I remember playing on old bombsites in south London where my step gran lived. Very different times.
