Every Tuesday I’m breaking down something the box score hides. First up: the first swing.
First ball kill % is how often a team puts the ball away on its very first attack off serve receive. No rally, no scramble. Side out and done. I charted every Top 25 team from 2025: nationally, in the final AVCA poll, and Power 4 vs. everyone else.
The pattern that jumps out: the best teams don’t grind out points, they end them early. Overall hitting % shows you who’s good. First ball kill shows you who’s elite.
