New series 🏐
Every Tuesday I’m breaking down something the box score hides. First up: the first swing.
First ball kill % is how often a team puts the ball away on its very first attack off serve receive. No rally, no scramble. Side out and done. I charted every Top 25 team from 2025: nationally, in the final AVCA poll, and Power 4 vs. everyone else.
The pattern that jumps out: the best teams don’t grind out points, they end them early. Overall hitting % shows you who’s good. First ball kill shows you who’s elite.

Tuesday Takeaways: when the pass breaks down.

Almost half of all first swings in conference play (46%) came off a medium or poor pass. Off a good pass, teams hit .274 on that first swing. Off a bad one, .134.

So who still scores when the pass isn’t there? Nebraska (.358), Baylor (.345), BYU (.313), Wofford (.310) and Pittsburgh (.297) lead D1 in first-swing efficiency off medium and poor passes. Dayton actually hits better out of system than in.

And it matters: the team that hit better off bad passes won 71% of league matches.

League play is here. 91 conference matches across the SEC, Big Ten, Big 12, ACC, Big East, WCC, and Mountain West from Sept 23-27.

The team that won the sideout battle won 86 of 91 matches. The better passing team won just 60%. Converting the first ball mattered more than how good the pass was.

Who’s 2-0 and why:
SEC: Kentucky sided out 70.8% in a sweep of Texas
Big Ten: Wisconsin swept Purdue
Big 12: Kansas knocked opponents out of system on 57.9% of their serves
ACC: SMU’s 53.1 kill rate led every team across the leagues
Big East: five teams at 2-0, all the favorites won
WCC: upset of the weekend with St. Mary’s beating San Diego
Mountain West: Hawaii passed 66.4% - 2-0 on the weekend

Eight matches, three days, and Sunday is where it stacks up.

1pm — 16 Tennessee at 9 Penn State (BTN). The poll says Penn State by seven spots. Three weeks of volleyball say otherwise.
2pm — 3 Louisville at 4 Kentucky (ABC). Best first-ball conversion and best defense on any card here.
4pm — 15 Texas A&M at 20 Creighton (FS1). Best offense in the matchup against the better defense.
