What an honour meeting Ajamu X last night at a screening of 'Holding The Frame' - a new documentary film (not-yet-released) about Huddersfield-born artist/curator/archivist Dr. Ajamu X (Hon FRPS).
The event was a pre-Pride special showcase at Hive Cooperative Cafe Huddersfield.
The film revealed Huddersfield in the 70s & 80s provided Ajamu with the restrictions and space that led to the creation of the new visual language that defines his art form of the male black queer body.
During the Q & A, with Director Joseph Adesunloye, hosted by artist Jamal Gerald, Ajamu mentioned how delighted he was (a few years ago) to be commissioned to create a series of portraits (in our collection) celebrating the 41st anniversary of the pride march that took place in Huddersfield in 1981.
The colour script of Adesunloye's film was inspired by archival materials & rooms inside the Empire Cinema Club in Huddersfield. The primary colours contrast perfectly, with the black & white photography by Ajamu.
When the documentary is released, watch it 😊
