“This call may be monitored and recorded by us… and our service providers…” 😳
WHO ARE THE SERVICE PROVIDERS?

I think we all assumed phone systems were using us to train AI, but I asked outright, and the phone system said “Yes!” in the strangest happy-go-lucky tone. 🤖😬😳

There are so many problems with this, but the main one is that no company should own recordings of your voice unless you give them consent. We need to give them permission, and just calling a phone number should not give them blanket consent. It takes less than 3 seconds of source material to create a believable synthetic version of a person’s voice. Our biometric data, like voiceprint, should not be up for grabs.

We need laws around this. But until then, @walmart please disable this feature or at least give us an opt-out!

I’m not surprised given all that I’ve heard about them in the past years…

They are trying to normalize this. As a society, we need to NOT ALLOW them to normalize this. Cheers for sounding the alarm on this, Carin.

@walmart, STOP THIS invasive process and THEFT of your customers' voices. Very e v i l.

Since it’s so difficult for humans to protect their vocal identity in the age of AI, I wonder if we should all clone our own voice and register it as trademark so we can successfully sue for copyright if someone steals it. (I say this somewhat humorously, but maybe it’s not a bad idea.)

Not surprised at all, and mostly certain that this scenario will get much worse before it gets better.

Yes, I mentioned this at our recent AI meeting. Wal-Mart’s outgoing message says…. “Recordings used for customer service AND OTHER BUSINESS PURPOSES”
