The Williamson bowl is very scenic…
But it’s also quite tedious to navigate especially if you are attempting a single day push which means you’ve already covered ~7,000 feet of climbing and 12 miles getting up Shepherd Pass.
The only true route finding decision is when to begin ascending Williamson’s west face, as the gully is not visible until you are right below it. In my extensive internet research during the editing process of the YouTube video (I have developed a bad habit of doing more research AFTER I’ve climbed/skied a mountain than before 😬) I’ve seen people using some black stained rock as a landmark, but we were relying on the FKT gps route which had a slightly different ascent/descent path through the lower face.
Regardless it seems to be a bit of “choose your own adventure” to get into the gully. At the top of the gully we ran into
@kyle.brill, which was lucky because I hadn’t done my research for the top out and that would have taken us a while to figure out the chimney on our own.
We followed his route up the chimney and got onto the summit, my watch clocking in an almost even 10,000 feet of ascent (in high accuracy mode) which probably wasn’t too far off.
An absolute burger of an ascent.
