Fitness advice that kept me out of shape…
Even as a fitness coach, I lost my way. I spent years chasing trends, overcomplicating the basics & buying into advice that sounded convincing but didn’t actually get me leaner or healthier.
Losing 2½ stone wasn’t about finding a magic workout or diet. It came from consistent hard work, applying evidence-based principles and learning to ignore the noise. Once I filtered out the bullshit, I finally found what actually worked (for me).
Here are some pieces of fitness advice that kept me stuck:
“You can’t expect change by doing the same thing…”
I spent years copying workouts because they looked impressive. The biggest changes to my body came when I stopped chasing trends and focused on the fundamentals - training consistently and taking my sets to muscular failure, not just muscular fatigue. There’s a huge difference and learning it completely changed how I built muscle.
“Successful people wake up at 5am.”
I used to think waking up two hours earlier to train was the answer. In reality, giving myself those extra two hours of sleep made a far bigger difference. When I’m sleep deprived, I perform worse in the gym, make poorer food choices & my hormones feel completely out of balance. Ladies, if you’re serious about changing your body please don’t underestimate the power of sleep.
“Healthy eating doesn’t have to be boring.”
This one might sound controversial, but keeping my meals simple and repetitive was a game changer. I used to spend hours making exciting recipes I’d found online, only to realise I’d mindlessly eaten hundreds of calories while cooking. The daily indecision over what to eat also led to unnecessary snacking and poor choices. Once I stuck to a handful of familiar, consistent meals, staying on track became effortless. It might sound boring, but for me delivered results.
