a month agoFellow librarian and aspiring bookseller here - the tech literacy gap since the pandemic is real. Our library is trying to create programming to help bridge the gap but it is tough!
3 months agoI'm the same! I love working at a library but it isn't always easy. I WISH we could spend all day reading books but there are so many other things to do that there is not time to read on the job (except picture books, I can squeeze a few of those in)
3 months agoTrue that Librarianship doesn't get as paid as much as other jobs and patrons can be difficult but going into this field I realize that. Sometimes you are helping people who are taking the first step after losing everything and to me that is so rewarding
3 months agoThis….im currently in school working up to a MLIS program and I’m constantly getting asked about pay and “going in it just because I love books” like….thats not the whole point. I was a librarian’s assistant in high school and fell in love with being a helpful resource for my community, that’s the point.
3 months agoWait! You’re not a librarian because you LOVE books? Or because you’ve always wanted to work somewhere quiet? 😂
3 months agoIt's not a dream job. Lol. I had a goal, but calling it my dream is a lie tbh
3 months agoAs I librarian, I always tell people that those of us that stay in the field have to do it because we are passionate about the work we do. It is massively underpaid and some of the challenges we have to face are things an average person would not connect with our jobs. There's also a lot of compassion fatigue (mostly public librarians at least) because we are interacting with people who have experienced trauma, poverty and addiction, and we don't have the training or resources to help them the way that they need.
3 months agoYes the first time I tried to explain to someone how to do something on the computer and they said ‘what is a mouse?’ I was shocked but I’ve had it happen more than once! Lots of people have never used a computer before!
3 months agoAs a library professional, I get SO SICK of every article about “best jobs for neurodivergent people” bc they ALWAYS list librarian bc it’s “quiet, predictable, and low stress.” You can tell that none of these authors have any idea of what working in a library is actually like.
3 months agoI would say books are like 25% of my job. Most of it is attempting to help frustrated people with tech who direct all those feelings at US or telling people they can’t smoke, touch themselves sexually, or fight each other in the library 🤦🏻♀️ we’re basically adult babysitters
3 months agoAbsolutely one hundred percent to all of it. People forget this is a customer service job on top of being an IT job on top of being a social worker job on top of being anything else our communities aren’t finding elsewhere.
3 months agoYes, yes, yes!!!! Today is my 3rd year working in a library and yes I love my job and each day is different. But library work is more than just books.
