Ravel dedicated each movement of this piece to a friend he lost in WWI. When critics said it wasn’t sombre enough for a memorial, his response was simple: “The dead are sad enough, in their eternal silence.” In other words, this is a tribute that chooses to dance and celebrate instead. 🥹🕊️

What an extraordinary program. Ravel’s Le Tombeau de Couperin is such a beautiful work, and the story behind it makes hearing it all the more meaningful. I’m so excited for this performance! The programming and calibre of artists at the Vancouver Metropolitan Orchestra @vmocanada are always wonderful, and under the direction of Maestro Ken Hsieh @conductorken the performances have such energy, elegance, and heart. I absolutely love following what the VMO is doing and can’t wait to hear this one 🎶❤️
