In 2004, Ken Hsieh became the youngest Conductor-in-Residence in Vancouver Symphony history. In 2006, he conducted a young pianist’s professional performance for the very first time. Twenty years and hundreds of performances later, he’s still finding reasons to bring people back to the stage. Swipe to meet the Maestro. 🪄🎶

Before Carnegie Hall and the Sydney Opera House, Yo-Yo Ma heard a 16-year-old Avan Yu play and decided the world needed to hear more of him, too.

Good instinct, Yo-Yo. Swipe to meet the pianist coming home to open our 24th season. 🎹🎶

This September, the VMO invites you to experience Chopin’s virtuosity, Ravel’s wit and De Falla’s fire, the way they were meant to be experienced: live, together, and in person. 😌🎶

With Avan Yu on piano and Maestro Ken Hsieh conducting, it’s a musical reunion you won’t want to miss.

This piece began as a flamenco-fueled ballet about a woman haunted by her dead lover’s jealous ghost. Its centrepiece, the “Ritual Fire Dance,” has since become one of the most famous few minutes in the orchestral repertoire, a genuine crowd favourite that still gets pulled out as an encore on its own. Are you ready for it? 🔥

Are you coming too? 😌🫶

Next Sunday (Sep 20), we’re opening our 24th season at the Orpheum! The programme includes works by Chopin, Ravel & De Falla, but you really don’t need to know them to enjoy the music.

The concert starts at 2pm and we encourage you to join the pre-concert talk at 1:35pm to learn a bit more about the pieces.

You will also be able to listen to internationally acclaimed Vancouver pianist Avan Yu perform!

Ravel dedicated each movement of this piece to a friend he lost in WWI. When critics said it wasn’t sombre enough for a memorial, his response was simple: “The dead are sad enough, in their eternal silence.” In other words, this is a tribute that chooses to dance and celebrate instead. 🥹🕊️
